De organisatie waar ik stage loop is opzoek naar 2 sponsoren voor kinderen om naar prive onderwijs te kunnen gaan. Angel het eerste kind dat genoemd wordt, is degene waar ik mee werk en gaat op het moment helemaal niet naar school.
Het meisje, Elbica, heeft echt hulp nodig bij haar dyslexie, wanneer zij een letter moet lezen draait zij deze op de kop. In het onderwijs dat zij nu volgt weten docenten niet wat zij hiermee moeten.

Two Sponsors Needed!

Mentes would like to introduce you to two wonderful children for whom we are seeking sponsors, in order that they may attend a private colegio.

Angel
The first child is Angel, who was born in the United States to an American mother and a Guatemalan father. Angel´s mother died in a car crash and his father stayed in the United States another two years following the crash, raising his son. In July of this year, Angel´s father decided to return to Guatemala because he had no family in the United States to help care for Angel and because the difficulty he faced being undocumented.

Angel is a sweet and loveable child. He is bilingual in English and Spanish. He has experienced significant trauma in his life and is frequetly frightened that he will be left alone or that his father will die. Angel is currently working with an art therapist from Mentes around issues of loss and grief.

In the United States, Angel was selected to attend a school for ´gifted´ children and he excelled in all academic areas. Angel is a highly intelligent child and shows the ability to think on a level more common to 11 year olds than 6 year olds. He also has the ability to memorize and recall information after studying the information for just a few mintues.

Given Angel´s fluency in English and Spanish and his advanced academic achievements, Mentes is seeking a sponsor willing to commit $50 a month in order that Angel may attend a private colegio. While attendng colegio, Angel will also continue to receive mental health and academic tutoring from Mentes staff.

Elbica
Our second child is Elbica, a nine year old girl who started working with Mentes a year ago. Elbica is one of 5 children. She lives with her mother and siblings. Her father was murdered when she was 4 years old.

When we began working with Elbica, she had repeated the first grade twice due to severe dyslexia. There are no specialized services in Guatemalan public schools for children with dyslexia and without Mentes intervention, she most probably would have left school at a very young age.The first months of working with Elbica were very slow and difficult. Elbica experienced great difficulty in recalling letters and in writing. She also experienced difficulties in speech. She, like most children with dyslexia, sufferred from very low self esteem and had little confidence in her ability to learn.

One day, when working on letters of the alphabet, we handed Elbica the letters upside down. To our surprise, when we she looked at the letter sideways or upside down, she started to not only identify the letters, but began to be able to put them together into words and now even short sentences.

After months of hard work, Elbica is now making incredible progress in her studies. She is more confident in herself and shows increased enthusiasm for learning. Given this incredible progress, we would love to see Elbica transfer to a private colegio that offers services to children with dyslexia.

Again, for just $50 a month, a sponsor could change the life of Elbica forever, helping her move from a child likely to drop out of school to a child with a bright and hopeful future.
